Bridges and Crowns
A bridge and a crown are both prosthetic devices that are fixed in place. Different from dentures, which are removable, bridges and crowns are cemented to implants or existing teeth and can not be removed except by a dentist. Bridges and crowns can be used to complete a broken tooth, support a deformed tooth or completely replace missing teeth. This procedure involves reshaping some existing tooth to anchor the bridge or crown to. Once the tooth has been reduced and reshaped, a mold is made and sent off to a laboratory to have the bridge or crown manufactured for a perfect fit. The piece is also matched to your existing teeth's color. Then the bridge or crown is cemented into place.

Root Canal
Root canals have a bad and undeserved reputation. A root canal is actually a relatively simple procedure, involving little or no pain and only one to three visits. Root canal therapy enables you to save your tooth. When the pulp within the tooth becomes damaged the pulp tissue will die and can become infected. With root canal therapy, the pulp is removed and the canals cleaned out and then sealed to protect the tooth. A post and crown is then placed over the tooth to make it stronger.

Extraction
The removal of a tooth can come as the result of tooth decay, infection, a fractured tooth, gum disease or lack of space for the teeth in the mouth, such as an impacted wisdom tooth. When the tooth is removed there may be a small amount of normal bleeding. After extraction, there may be several options for replacing the tooth and our dentist will be more than happy to explain all of these options.

Mini Implants
Bridges, crowns and dentures are not the only choice for replacing extracted teeth. Mini implants are surgically placed below the gum line and fused to the jawbone. Individual teeth or complete arches of teeth can be replaced using mini implants. These implants will last for many years and require the same up keep as regular teeth, including check ups as well as brushing and flossing. The dentist will be happy to discuss if mini implants are right for you.

Full Dentures and Overdentures
Overdentures describe a situation where the dentures fit over any remaining roots in the mouth as opposed to resting directly on the soft gum tissue and is often more preferable than full dentures where the teeth are completely removed. Dr. Swanson can discuss with you which type of dentures are right for your individual situation.

Partial Dentures
A partial denture is attached to your existing teeth and fills the gap of several missing teeth. This appliance is removable but must be attached to healthy teeth to support it. Often the existing teeth that the partial denture will be attached to need to be repaired or reinforced with bridges or crowns before the metal frame can be attached.

Sealants
A sealant is a shield or coating that adheres to the surface of the tooth to protect it from decay. Sealants are normally applied to the back permanent teeth just after they come in. During this procedure the teeth to be sealed are cleaned, and then etched with a chemical to make the sealant adhere. The teeth are then rinsed and dried and then the sealant is applied with a small sponge or brush. Then a special ultraviolet light is used to harden the sealant. This process will protect the tooth from decay by blocking the oxygen and food that bacteria need to grow and can last for many years.

Whitening
Whitening is one of the most rapidly improving new procedures in dentistry and many options are available. Please ask Dr. Swanson to discuss which option is right for you.

Scaling, Root Planing, Oral Irrigation

Scaling
Root Planing
Oral Irrigation
Treating and preventing periodontal disease depends on the type of periodontal disease and how far the condition has progressed from gingivitis (mild inflamation of the gums due to plaque buildup) to periodontitis (gum separated from tooth) or advanced periodontitis (gums continue to recede and separate further from the tooth).

Scaling cleans the teeth to remove deposits above the and below the gumline.

Root Planing smooths rough root surfaces so the gum can heal. Oral Irrigation directs liquid below the gumline to flush out and kill germs and allow the regrowth of healthy tissue.
